GM, Ford Quietly Cut EV Talk
31 Jul
Summary
- Automakers are discussing EVs less than pre-pandemic.
- Companies have delayed or canceled EV models.
- Focus shifts to software, services, and autonomous tech.

General Motors and Ford have dramatically decreased their focus on electric vehicles (EVs) in investor calls over the past seven years, with discussions now at a lower rate than pre-pandemic. This shift follows the companies altering, delaying, or canceling plans for new EV models and scaling back factory operations.
GM, which once aimed for an all-electric future by 2035, has seen EV mentions drop significantly. From over 100 references in late 2020 calls to just 21 on its most recent Q2 2026 call, the company now emphasizes aligning EV capacity with policy changes.
Ford, after launching models like the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning, also reduced EV talk. The company is now prioritizing its new Universal Electric Vehicle platform, with the first product, a midsize pickup truck, expected next year.
Both automakers are increasingly dedicating earnings call time to growth opportunities in software and services, as well as autonomous technology, alongside traditional performance metrics and policy discussions.
