Global Trust Declines: Employers Offer Safe Haven
19 Jan
Summary
- Global distrust in institutions is rising due to geopolitical tensions.
- Employers are now seen as the most credible sources of trust.
- Nearly 70% of people distrust those with different values or backgrounds.

A pervasive sense of distrust is becoming the global default, fueled by mounting geopolitical tensions and economic anxieties. Edelman's annual survey, conducted across 28 countries, reveals a significant erosion of confidence in governments, businesses, and media. This decline leaves individuals seeking reassurance and stability, with employers now identified as the most credible brokers of trust.
The workplace has emerged as a relatively safe environment for discussing complex issues like artificial intelligence and economic livelihoods. This stems from established rules of conduct within offices, which are perceived as lacking elsewhere. Businesses are urged to uphold this trust, as insularity and detachment can negatively impact their bottom line, according to the survey findings.
Concerns about inflation, potential job displacement by AI, and disinformation are identified as key corrosive factors undermining trust. A majority of low-income workers fear being left behind by technological advancements, and less than a third believe the next generation will experience improved circumstances. This widespread apprehension contributes to a societal mindset shifting towards apprehension and isolation.
