Glasgow Vue Cinema Staff Strike Over Pay & Safety

Staff at one of Glasgow's busiest cinemas, Vue at St Enoch's Centre, have initiated strike action. The protest centers on inadequate wages, unsatisfactory working conditions, and a lack of official trade union recognition from the company. Workers highlighted significant concerns regarding their safety after late shifts, particularly the absence of paid transport home, forcing many to walk through potentially unsafe areas or spend a substantial portion of their wages on taxis.

The industrial action, believed to be the first of its kind in Scotland's cinema sector, is scheduled to last until January 7. Around 50 employees, represented by the Unite union, voted in favor of striking and are expected to picket the venue. The union emphasizes that their demands include being paid the real living wage, formal recognition by Vue, better contracted hours, and crucially, paid transportation for late-night workers.

Vue has stated that screenings will continue with temporary staff, and that they maintain open dialogue with their employees. However, union representatives express frustration, feeling their concerns have not been adequately addressed through official channels. The dispute highlights growing tensions within the hospitality sector regarding fair pay and employee welfare.
