Germany Secures Long-Term LNG Deal with Canada

German energy group Uniper finalized a significant 20-year liquefied natural gas (LNG) purchase agreement with Canada. This deal, effective from 2032, secures 2 million tons of gas annually from Canada's Ksi Lisims project on British Columbia's Pacific coast. This move reflects a broader European strategy to establish alternative gas supply routes, particularly after disruptions from Russia's Gazprom in 2022. The Ksi Lisims project, backed by Western LNG, Rockies LNG consortium, and the Nisga'a First Nation, plans to power its gas liquefaction facilities using hydroelectric dams. Canada also aims to reduce its own dependence on U.S. buyers through export deals with nations like Japan, India, and Malaysia. This energy partnership is part of deepening bilateral ties, following Canada's recent selection of a German firm to supply 12 submarines.
