German Battery Boom: Production Hits Record High
16 Jun
Summary
- German battery production soared 11% to €8.1 billion in 2025.
- Lithium-ion battery output surged 28%, reaching €4.6 billion.
- Germany's reliance on Chinese battery imports grew by 25%.

Battery production in Germany reached an unprecedented €8.1 billion in 2025, marking an 11% increase. This surge was primarily fueled by the expanding electric vehicle (EV) sector and robust demand within the energy storage market. Lithium-ion batteries experienced particularly strong growth, with output climbing 28% to €4.6 billion.
Despite this domestic success, Germany's reliance on China for battery imports escalated significantly. Imports from China rose by a quarter, totaling approximately €11 billion in 2025, solidifying China's position as the leading supplier. This dependence, especially for lithium-ion batteries, raises concerns about supply chain vulnerability in critical sectors.
The German Electrical and Digital Industry Association (ZVEI) advocates for domestic production as a strategic goal, supporting the European target of meeting 40% of battery cell demand internally by 2030. The association also highlighted the need for lower electricity prices rather than purchase subsidies for EVs to foster industry growth and prevent potential loss of European battery manufacturing.
