As of September 2025, a new report reveals that Generation Z is challenging the perception of accounting as a dull profession and reaping the benefits of a booming job market.
Traditionally, accounting has been viewed as a lackluster career, with a 2022 study cited by Fortune magazine ranking it as the second-most stereotypical "boring" job. However, the tides are turning as millions of baby boomer accountants approach retirement.
In the last five years, approximately 340,000 accountants have already left the workforce, creating a significant gap that Gen Z is now poised to fill. Many young people are even starting their accounting careers before graduating college, with hundreds of students at California State University, Northridge helping low-income Americans claim millions in tax refunds and credits through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
The financial rewards of the accounting profession are also proving to be a major draw for Gen Z. According to job site Glassdoor, the average accountant earns $93,000 per year, with experienced professionals and certified public accountants (CPAs) making up to $122,000 and $200,000, respectively.
As the accounting industry undergoes a generational shift, Gen Z is seizing the opportunity to revive a field once seen as dull, proving that with the right mindset and skills, a career in accounting can be both lucrative and fulfilling.
