Gen Z Battles 'Bed Rot' as Financial Stress Keeps Them Awake
16 Nov
Summary
- 7 in 10 Gen Zers lose sleep over money matters
- Over 1/3 of Gen Z resort to 'bed rotting' to cope with financial fears
- Gen Z's top worries: job security and rising housing costs

As of November 16th, 2025, a new survey from mattress company Amerisleep has uncovered a troubling trend: financial stress is causing sleepless nights across America, with Gen Z bearing the brunt of the burden.
The data shows that almost half of U.S. adults now struggle with sleep due to money worries, particularly after recent tariff talks. However, the report reveals that Gen Z is really dooming over their dollars, with nearly 7 in 10 saying they're mulling over financial matters when they should be catching some z's.
In fact, more than a third of Gen Zers are resorting to "bed rotting" - lying in bed with no purpose - to cope with their financial fears. And it doesn't stop there, as 57% of Gen Z respondents are scrolling through social media, and 47% are watching TV, all in an attempt to keep their minds occupied on anything but money problems.
The survey found that Gen Z's most pressing financial concerns center around job security and housing affordability. With a 13% decline in entry-level jobs for young employees since 2022 due to the rise of AI, and 60% of U.S. households unable to afford a $300,000 home, it's no wonder this generation is feeling the strain.
While these anxieties are understandable, experts say there are healthier ways for Gen Z to deal with financial stress, such as establishing a solid sleep routine and gaining transparency over their financial situation. With a little effort, these "bed rot" blues can be conquered.
