FPIs Return: India Sees Selective Sectoral Stock Buys
21 Jul
Summary
- FPIs invested heavily in consumer services, metals, and healthcare sectors.
- Metals and mining saw a trend reversal from outflows to significant inflows.
- AI trade concentration risk may be driving foreign investor interest to India.

Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) are demonstrating a cautious return to Indian equities, prioritizing specific sectors like consumer services, metals and mining, and healthcare. Between July 1 and July 15, these sectors attracted net inflows totaling Rs 7,361 crore, Rs 5,993 crore, and Rs 4,101 crore, respectively.
The metals and mining sector, in particular, witnessed a significant trend reversal, moving from substantial outflows in the prior fortnight to strong positive investment. Overall net FPI inflows in the first half of July reached Rs 15,559 crore, surpassing the previous fortnight's figures.
This renewed interest in India is partly attributed to the potential exhaustion of concentrated artificial intelligence (AI) related trades in markets like Taiwan and South Korea. Experts note that foreign investors may be seeking India's well-diversified market, which offers durable growth with lower valuation premiums, making it an attractive alternative.
Despite some outflows from sectors like automobiles and capital goods, the overall sentiment suggests returning confidence in India's investment landscape. Projections indicate potential earnings growth in the range of 16-17%, further bolstering India's appeal as an investment destination.
