Ford Halts Production of Iconic Focus Hatchback After 27 Years
17 Nov
Summary
- Ford Focus production ends after 27 years and over 12 million global sales
- Focus was Britain's second most common car, now to be replaced by electric SUVs
- Ford's shift to EVs leads to discontinuation of popular combustion-engine models
In a significant shift for the automotive industry, Ford has officially discontinued production of the Ford Focus, one of Britain's most beloved cars over the past three decades. The last version of the Focus rolled off the German assembly line on November 15, 2025, marking the end of a 27-year production run for the popular hatchback.
The Focus had amassed over 12 million global sales since its debut in 1998, making it the second most common car on British roads. However, as Ford accelerates its transition to electric vehicles, the company has been forced to cull some of its most recognizable combustion-engine models, including the Focus and the Fiesta, which was discontinued just two years ago.
The void left by the Focus will be filled by the Explorer and Capri electric SUVs, which are based on Volkswagen's MEB architecture. While these new models aim to meet the growing demand for electric vehicles, they have so far failed to capture the same level of popularity among British consumers as the beloved Focus.
Looking ahead, Ford is expected to introduce a new mid-sized crossover in 2027 as a direct replacement for the Focus. This move underscores the automaker's commitment to adapting to the rapidly evolving automotive landscape, even if it means bidding farewell to some of its most iconic models.
