Produce Price Shock: Lettuce & Tomatoes Skyrocket!
12 Mar
Summary
- Lettuce prices saw the largest monthly jump since December 2018.
- February's deep freeze impacted crop yields, driving up food costs.
- Coffee and beef prices continue to be a concern for consumers.

Food staple costs, including eggs, coffee, and beef, have become a significant concern for consumers and a contentious political issue. In February, lettuce prices experienced a dramatic 12.2% increase, marking the largest monthly rise since December 2018. Tomatoes also saw a substantial 6.4% jump, the highest in a decade.
These sharp increases in produce prices occurred amidst a broader trend of slowing underlying inflation in the US. Experts attribute the tight supplies of lettuce and tomatoes to adverse weather conditions. Heavy rains and unseasonably hot weather in California and Arizona impacted lettuce production, while reduced imports from Mexico appear to be affecting tomato availability.
Florida's agricultural sector also suffered immensely from a severe freeze in February, described as the worst in decades, resulting in an estimated 80% loss of its tomato crop. The impact of these supply chain disruptions extended to other food items, with fresh cakes and cupcakes rising a record 4.4% in February.
