Cash Tolls Allowed in 4 States Amid FASTag Rule
17 Apr
Summary
- Four states and one UT are exempt from FASTag due to elections.
- Non-FASTag users paying by UPI face a 25% higher toll fee.
- FASTag annual pass offers 200 toll crossings for Rs 3,000 yearly.

The National Highways Authority of India's (NHAI) digital-only toll payment mandate has an exception for specific regions. Currently, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, West Bengal, and the Union Territory of Puducherry are exempt from the FASTag requirement. This exemption is due to the ongoing electoral process and the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct in these areas, as any major policy change could potentially influence voters.
For travelers in these specific regions, cash payments at toll plazas remain an option throughout April 2026. However, nationwide, FASTag is the primary method for toll payments. Vehicles without a valid FASTag can opt for UPI payments, but at a higher cost. A surcharge of 1.25 times the applicable toll fee, or an additional 25%, will be levied on these transactions. For frequent users, NHAI offers an annual pass allowing 200 toll crossings for Rs 3,000.
