Startup Turns Toxic Waste into Riches

Summary
- Fast Metals is extracting valuable minerals from toxic red mud.
- A $4.3 million pre-seed round was recently secured for the startup.
- The process uses a complementary waste stream for economic viability.

Fast Metals, a startup co-founded by Sumedh Gostu, is transforming hazardous red mud, a waste product from aluminum refining, into a profitable resource. The company has developed a proprietary chemical process that extracts valuable minerals, including titanium and rare earth elements, from the red mud. This innovative approach, which also incorporates another refinery waste stream, makes the extraction economically feasible.
Recently, Fast Metals successfully raised $4.3 million in pre-seed funding, with significant contributions from New Climate Ventures, Azolla Ventures, Astor Swiss, and Rio Tinto's accelerator. The company's process efficiently separates minerals, with iron extraction covering operational expenses and the sale of other extracted minerals contributing to profit.
With this new capital, Fast Metals aims to scale its technology. The startup has already secured a commercial contract with mineral processor Metalox to treat one ton of red mud and refinery waste weekly starting later this year.
