Fal, a San Francisco-based company specializing in hosting and running AI models for video, image, and audio, announced a significant funding achievement. The startup successfully raised $1.3 billion in a recent funding round, led by Bessemer Venture Partners with notable participation from Nvidia, Sound Ventures, and T. Rowe Price. This latest investment propels Fal's valuation to $16 billion, a substantial increase from its $8 billion valuation in April.
Fal disclosed that it raised a combined $1.65 billion across its Series E and F funding rounds. This Series F round arrives during a period of heightened demand for inference services, which involve running trained AI models to generate outputs, especially for those utilizing open-source models. Fal's financial performance has been robust, having surpassed $800 million in annualized revenue earlier this year.
Other companies in the AI inference sector, such as Baseten, Fireworks AI, and Modal, are also experiencing rapid expansion and securing substantial funding. However, the high costs associated with compute resources often result in thin gross margins for these companies. Fal was co-founded in 2021 by Burkay Gur and Gorkem Yurtseven, both with extensive backgrounds in machine learning and engineering from major tech companies.
