The Indian government has greenlit the sale of a controlling stake in IDBI Bank to Fairfax India Holdings Corporation for Rs 52,878 crore. This landmark transaction, valued at approximately $5.6 billion, represents a substantial investment by Fairfax, led by the prominent investor Prem Watsa.
The approved bid from Fairfax cleared a benchmark price, signaling a favorable valuation by the government. Following the transaction, the government and LIC will retain a combined 34% stake in IDBI Bank, with Fairfax taking the helm as the new promoter. Regulatory approvals from the RBI are still pending.
As part of the acquisition terms, Fairfax is mandated to merge its existing Indian banking entity, CSB Bank, into IDBI Bank within two years. This move integrates Fairfax's expanding financial portfolio in India, which also includes interests in companies like Thomas Cook India and Bangalore International Airport Ltd.
IDBI Bank, previously reclassified as a private sector bank in 2019 after LIC's acquisition of a controlling stake, now enters a new phase under private promoter leadership. The bank reported a net profit of Rs 9,513 crore for FY26, with total business exceeding Rs 6,00,789 crore.
