5 Oct
Summary
- Five major European payment providers formed the European Network for Payments (ENP).
- ENP ensures interoperability between existing payment platforms without replacement.
- The network already serves over 70% of the EU and Norway's population.

Five of Europe's leading payment providers have launched the European Network for Payments (ENP), a new initiative designed to enhance cross-border transactions. This network acts as an interoperability layer, connecting platforms like Italy's Bancomat, Spain's Bizum, Portugal's MB WAY, and the Nordics' Vipps MobilePay. It allows users to continue using their preferred payment applications while enabling seamless payments across Europe.
The ENP's initial rollout will focus on person-to-person international payments, with e-commerce and in-store payment functionalities to follow. This development aims to strengthen Europe's digital sovereignty by creating a unified payment system that competes with dominant global players. The network is projected to cover all three payment types by the close of 2027.
