European Rail Firms Locked Out of €97 Billion Market
22 Sep
Summary
- EU rail suppliers lose access to €97 billion in annual global business.
- Trade barriers restrict European companies from entering growing markets.
- Global rail market projected to reach €266.8 billion by 2029-2031.

European rail suppliers are currently shut out of an estimated €97 billion ($111 billion) in annual global market opportunities. This exclusion is attributed to trade barriers that restrict their access to foreign markets, according to the 2026 World Rail Market Study. Governments worldwide are increasing rail investments to reduce emissions, yet this growth does not benefit European companies as much as it could.
The study, which surveyed 66 countries, indicates that EU rail suppliers now have access to only 56% of global rail markets. This represents a decline from previous years and reflects a trend that has persisted for nearly two decades. Countries like China, India, and the United States are actively promoting domestic manufacturing, creating challenges for foreign competitors.
Market inaccessibility is defined by restrictions such as limited bidding for contracts, requirements for local product development, mandatory joint ventures, or in-house service provisions. Despite these obstacles, the global rail market is anticipated to grow to €266.8 billion by 2029-2031, up from €221 billion in 2023-2025. This represents an average annual growth rate of 3.2%, showing a strong recovery post-pandemic.
