3 Jun
Summary
- Up to 1.3 million jobs at risk across key European industries.
- Automotive sector faces potential 600,000 layoffs.
- Energy-intensive sectors and low-income households are most vulnerable.

A surge in energy prices, exacerbated by the Middle East conflict, is poised to eliminate up to 1.3 million jobs across Europe. Labour Commissioner Roxana Minzatu stated that energy-intensive industries are especially vulnerable to these developments. The European Commission estimates that the automotive sector alone could face up to 600,000 layoffs.
Further job losses are anticipated in construction, metals, chemicals, and transport sectors. Other areas like battery projects and solar manufacturing also face significant risk. Additionally, low-income households are projected to spend an increased portion of their income on transport fuel as a direct consequence of these global events.
