Etsy Bans AI Slop: New Rules for Sellers
23 Oct
Summary
- Sellers must include an unedited photo of the actual item.
- AI-generated functional guides are prohibited.
- AI art sales are allowed with mandatory disclosure.

Etsy is cracking down on the proliferation of AI-generated content with new, stricter policies. The platform aims to address concerns from both buyers unable to distinguish AI items and sellers worried about misleading AI usage.
Effective immediately, all listings must feature at least one unedited photograph of the actual product. Subsequent images can be edited, but must remain accurate representations. Etsy will flag potentially AI-generated images during upload, prompting sellers to disclose their origin. Misrepresenting items could lead to refunds.
Furthermore, Etsy has banned AI-generated "functional guides," such as patterns or instructions, requiring sellers to demonstrate an "actual result" created from their guides. Listings created entirely by bots are also disallowed. However, the sale of AI-generated art remains permitted, provided sellers clearly disclose its AI nature.
