French utility Engie has announced a significant expansion of its power business through the acquisition of electricity distributor UK Power Networks for 10.5 billion pounds ($14.2 billion). The deal, expected to finalize by mid-2026, aims to fortify Engie's operations against energy market fluctuations.
This strategic move is projected to enhance per-share earnings from the first year. UK Power Networks, currently owned by CK Infrastructure Holdings Limited, operates extensive infrastructure across London and southeastern England, serving 8.5 million customers.
Engie CEO Catherine MacGregor emphasized that this acquisition fulfills the company's nearly two-year-old ambition to strengthen its position in electricity distribution networks. Britain is set to become Engie's second-largest market by earnings before interest and tax, following France.
The company has also revised its financial outlook upward, anticipating net recurring income of 4.6 to 5.2 billion euros in 2026. The acquisition will be financed through a combination of debt, hybrid securities, new shares, and asset disposals.
