Electro States Poised to Dominate Global Energy Race
25 Feb
Summary
- Global energy transition has passed a critical point, according to ReNew CEO.
- Electro states like India and China are set to triumph over fossil fuel-rich petro states.
- Technology and falling renewable costs drive the energy transition forward.

The global energy transition has reached a critical juncture and is highly resilient to geopolitical and economic challenges, stated Sumant Sinha, founder and CEO of ReNew. Initially driven by climate concerns, the transition is now also propelled by energy security, affordability, and geopolitical factors. Sinha categorizes nations into "petro states" (fossil fuel-rich) and "electro states" (reliant on electrification, like India and China).
Sinha predicts that electro states will ultimately win the energy race, primarily due to technological superiority and the declining costs of renewable energy. He noted that battery prices have significantly decreased, and solar power is now the cheapest form of new energy generation in many regions. As end-user industries increasingly adopt electricity, the position of electro states is further strengthened.
India is leading in electrification at a lower per capita income, with a strong focus on clean energy. The country aims to increase electricity's share in its energy basket from 20% currently to 60% by 2070, with renewables supplying 85% of that power. This requires a massive scaling of renewable capacity from 140 GW to 6,000 GW by 2070, presenting both a significant opportunity and challenge for India's energy sector.
