Energy bills are poised for another increase as Ofgem raises its price cap by 4% to £1,723 annually for typical dual-fuel households starting October 1.
Experts from Energy Saving Trust, Uswitch, and Octopus Energy have shared 12 practical tips that could collectively save households up to £670 per year in Great Britain. These recommendations focus on simple household adjustments rather than major renovations.
Key savings can be achieved by lowering the thermostat by just one degree, which experts estimate can save over £100 annually. Other effective measures include reducing appliance standby usage to save around £45, and draught-proofing homes, potentially saving up to £85.
In an effort to mitigate rising costs, the government will remove VAT from electricity bills from October 1 until March 31, 2027. This intervention, alongside other measures, aims to soften the impact of increased wholesale gas prices, which have been influenced by global conflicts.
Switching to a fixed energy tariff that beats the new price cap is highlighted as the most significant saving, with current deals offering around £184 in annual savings compared to standard rates. The price cap itself, which limits the maximum charge per unit of energy, will see a 1% rise on electricity and an 8% rise on gas.
