Energean Eyes $1B BP Egypt Oil & Gas Deal

Energean is currently in exclusive negotiations with bp for the potential acquisition of several of the British energy giant's upstream oil and gas holdings located in Egypt. This significant transaction could yield approximately $1 billion for bp.

The assets under consideration reportedly include bp's interests in the offshore West Nile Delta fields, which it operates jointly with Harbour Energy, as well as its 50% working interest in the Temsah concession in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Recently, Eni, a partner in the Temsah concession, announced a substantial discovery of an estimated two trillion cubic feet of gas. A final investment decision for this find is anticipated in the coming months.

This potential divestment is part of bp's broader strategy to streamline its operations, manage debt, and reduce costs. The company, which has a long-standing presence in Egypt with over 60 years of operation and more than $35 billion invested, would retain its interests in the Zohr gas field through its Arcius joint venture with XRG.

Energean has expressed a clear intention to diversify its operations beyond its primary gas fields in Israel, which have experienced operational disruptions. The company is actively seeking growth opportunities in Egypt and West Africa. Several potential bidders, including Dragon Oil and Carlyle Group, were reportedly in contention for bp's West Nile Delta assets.

As of the reporting date, bp's production in Egypt stood at 518 million cubic feet per day of natural gas, reflecting a notable decline from previous years.
