Enbridge Secures $2.7B Gas Pipeline Deal

Enbridge has secured a C$2.7 billion financing agreement with KKR and Apollo for significant expansions to its Westcoast natural gas pipeline system located in British Columbia. This collaboration introduces private infrastructure capital into a critical Western Canadian energy network. The agreement involves KKR-led capital accounts and funds managed by Apollo funding the Aspen Point and Sunrise expansion programs.

Upon the completion of the Sunrise expansion, investors KKR and Apollo will collectively hold an indirect 29% interest in the extensive Westcoast system. Enbridge will maintain its majority ownership and operational control over the projects. The transaction includes an immediate C$700 million cash payment to Enbridge, with investors commencing distributions as each expansion becomes operational. Aspen Point is slated for service in 2026, with Sunrise expected by late 2028.

This financing structure enables Enbridge to support growth initiatives without bearing the full capital burden on its balance sheet. The company highlighted that this deal aligns with its capital-recycling strategy, which has generated C$19 billion since 2014. The Westcoast system, stretching over 2,900 kilometers across British Columbia, currently moves up to 3.6 billion cubic feet of natural gas daily. The Sunrise expansion is projected to increase this capacity to approximately 3.9 Bcf/d. Both expansion projects have already obtained regulatory approval and are supported by long-term take-or-pay contracts, mitigating exposure to natural gas price volatility.
