Employers Rethink Weight-Loss Drug Coverage
11 Jun
Summary
- Some employers plan to drop weight-loss drug coverage in 2027.
- New oral GLP-1 options increase demand and employer costs.
- Direct drug pricing offers transparency and potential savings.

Several large employers are planning to discontinue coverage for popular GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, such as Novo Nordisk's Wegovy and Eli Lilly's Zepbound, starting in 2027. This move comes as demand for these medications, particularly newer oral formulations, has surged.
Approximately 5-10% of employers surveyed indicated they intend to drop coverage for these weight-loss treatments. While the unit cost of GLP-1s has decreased, the expanding patient population and prolonged use of these drugs are sustaining high overall expenses for employers. Health insurer Cigna has already ceased coverage for its own employees.
Industry experts note that increased transparency in drug pricing, partly due to direct-to-consumer models and government-negotiated rates, is allowing employers to better assess their spending. This visibility highlights opportunities for cost improvements, even as the overall market for these medications continues to grow.
