Embraer Pitches KC-390 as India's New Airlifter
22 Feb
Summary
- Embraer proposes KC-390 Millennium for India's 80 aircraft deal.
- India could become Embraer's Asia-Pacific production hub.
- KC-390 offers faster speed, higher payload than C-130J.

Embraer is actively seeking to supply up to 80 military transport aircraft to India with its KC-390 Millennium. The company has proposed making India a primary production hub for aircraft serving the Asia-Pacific market, alongside establishing a regional maintenance center.
This strategic pitch comes as the Indian Air Force looks to replace its aging An-32 and IL-76 fleets. Embraer's KC-390 is presented as a technologically advanced and versatile option, boasting a higher payload and faster speed than the Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules. Its jet-powered design and modern avionics position it as a 21st-century airlifter.
Embraer's CEO noted the aircraft's growing adoption by NATO countries, framing the KC-390 as a strategic alternative. The company also has a partnership with Mahindra to bid for the deal, aiming for significant indigenous content. Embraer is also exploring civilian aviation opportunities in India with Adani Defence and Aerospace for the E175 regional jet.
The Indian Air Force issued a Request for Information for medium transport aircraft in 2022. The multi-billion dollar procurement is expected to be cleared by the Defence Acquisition Council in the coming months, with Airbus's A-400M also being a contender.
