Lilly Soars: Weight-Loss Drugs Drive Sales Surge
30 Apr
Summary
- Eli Lilly raised its 2026 sales outlook to $85 billion.
- Mounjaro sales hit $8.7 billion, Zepbound sales reached $4.2 billion.
- New pill Foundayo shows a strong start, offered on telehealth platforms.

Eli Lilly & Co. has elevated its 2026 sales projection to a maximum of $85 billion, a notable increase from the previous $83 billion estimate. This upward revision is largely attributed to the robust performance of its current weight-loss medications and positive early results from its recently approved oral treatment.
The pharmaceutical giant now anticipates 2026 earnings per share to range between $35.50 and $37, exceeding prior forecasts. This improved outlook comes amidst intense competition in the lucrative weight-loss market, which is projected to reach $100 billion by the end of the decade.
In the latest quarter, Lilly's top-selling diabetes drug Mounjaro generated $8.7 billion in sales, surpassing estimates of $7.2 billion. Concurrently, its blockbuster obesity medication Zepbound achieved $4.2 billion in sales, exceeding the $4 billion forecast.
Lilly also highlighted a strong debut for its new weight-loss pill, Foundayo, which has been adopted by over a dozen major telehealth platforms, representing approximately 35% of prescriptions at launch. The company is exploring strategic acquisitions to strengthen its drug pipeline, recently investing billions in Centessa Pharmaceuticals Plc, Kelonia Therapeutics, and Ajax Therapeutics Inc.
While Lilly's Mounjaro and Zepbound still have a decade of patent protection, competitor Novo Nordisk is already facing generic competition in markets like India and Canada. Both companies have engaged with the U.S. administration to potentially lower drug prices in exchange for expanded Medicare coverage.
Novo and Lilly are now racing to introduce needle-free pill alternatives. Lilly's Foundayo gained approval in April and faces competition from Novo's popular pill, which utilizes semaglutide, the same active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy. Lilly is also developing retatrutide, an experimental drug that has shown significant weight loss in trials.
