Tata Elxsi and Sarla Aviation have formalized a partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding to co-develop Shunya, a novel six-seater electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. This strategic alliance unites Tata Elxsi's extensive engineering prowess in avionics, flight control systems, software, and certification with Sarla Aviation's primary role in the design and development of the Shunya platform.
The Shunya aircraft is conceptualized for operational flights surpassing 300 kilometers, uniquely combining vertical take-off and landing capabilities with the efficiency of fixed-wing cruising. This design ensures runway-independent operations for enhanced connectivity across regions. The initial flight of the Shunya is projected to occur within 18 to 24 months from the announcement date.
Following the successful first flight, extensive certification activities will commence. This collaboration may further extend to advanced areas such as sensor fusion-based navigation software, structural design enhancements, and support for airworthiness testing. Both companies envision potential future applications for Shunya in logistics, emergency medical services, and defense sectors.
