6 Jun
Summary
- Standard pack sizes for edible oils are now mandated.
- Consumers can now easily compare prices across brands.
- A three-month transition period is provided for compliance.

The Department of Consumer Affairs has established standard pack sizes for edible oils under the Legal Metrology framework to enhance consumer price comparison. Manufacturers, packers, and importers are granted a three-month period to adapt to these new regulations.
The revised Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) specifies nine pack sizes, ranging from 200 ml/g to 20 litre/kg, for a variety of major edible oils. This decision stemmed from extensive consultations with industry associations.
These provisions apply to both domestic and imported edible oils, with exemptions for small packages below 200 ml or 200 grams and minor oils to ensure affordability. Businesses can voluntarily adopt the standard sizes immediately.
Industry representatives have welcomed the standardization, citing its potential to correct market distortions caused by a proliferation of non-standard pack sizes and reduce consumer confusion.
