Earthen Lamps Shine Bright Despite Price Hike
3 Dec, 2025
Summary
- Earthen lamp prices increased by 10% due to rising raw material costs.
- Sales of lamps were high for Karthigai Deepam festival despite price increases.
- Pottery workers face industry decline due to clay extraction difficulties.

The prices of traditional earthen lamps, known as 'akal lamps,' have risen by 10% in the Salem region this year. This increase is a direct result of escalating raw material expenses and difficulties in obtaining suitable clay. Despite the higher costs, sales for the upcoming Karthigai Deepam festival have been robust, with markets in Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, and Erode districts experiencing brisk business.
Pottery workers in certain areas, however, report a significant decline in their industry. Production has reportedly dropped by 50% due to challenges in clay extraction, rising material prices, and a shortage of labor. Consequently, some workers have resorted to selling lamps manufactured in other districts.
Continuous rains ahead of the festival also impacted production in some regions, further limiting availability. Lamp makers are urging the government for assistance, including permission for clay extraction, loan support for new equipment, and avenues for sales through cooperative societies to ensure steady business throughout the year.
