Drax Power Plant Shifts to AI Datacenter Future

Drax, a major energy company, has unveiled ambitious plans to transform a section of its North Yorkshire power plant into a state-of-the-art datacentre. With an anticipated operational start by 2027, this 100-megawatt facility is designed to meet the escalating global demand for artificial intelligence computing power. The project signals a significant diversification for the company, leveraging existing infrastructure such as land, cooling systems, and transformers that were integral to its former coal-fired operations.

The strategic decision to develop a datacentre comes in the wake of government indications to curb subsidies for electricity generation, particularly for biomass. Drax's move aims to preemptively safeguard its energy output and ensure continued profitability. While the initial datacentre will draw power from the national grid, future possibilities include integrating electricity generated directly from the Drax power plant, further enhancing operational synergy.
