Dog Food Recall: Eye Condition Linked to Recipe Change
19 Aug
Summary
- Dog food brand recalls all fresh meals due to potential eye condition.
- Recipe change involving buckwheat ingredient linked to adverse reactions.
- 192 customer reports of potential eye issues out of 40,000 customers.

A significant recall has been issued for all fresh meals from a personalized, subscription-based dog food service due to concerns over a newly introduced ingredient. Reports indicate that a recipe modification, specifically the inclusion of buckwheat, may be linked to a serious eye condition in dogs, known as sudden bilateral dry eye. This condition, if untreated, can result in permanent blindness. The company began receiving multiple reports of this issue in late July, following the switch to the new recipe for all customers in late July. As of Wednesday, the company has documented 192 customer reports of potential eye problems, a concerning figure out of its roughly 40,000-strong customer base. Earlier reports on Sunday indicated 57 suspected cases. The company is investigating a potential link to buckwheat, including possible contamination within its supply chain. A voluntary recall was decided upon Monday as a precautionary measure, even though conclusive evidence of causation has not yet been established. Owners have been strongly advised to cease feeding these meals to their dogs and to avoid donating or selling them. Online communities have formed to discuss the issue, with one Facebook group dedicated to "Years Dry Eye Cases and info" rapidly growing to over 2,100 members by Wednesday morning.
