In the first quarter of FY27, digital non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) reported sanctioning 3.4 crore personal loans, valued at ₹64,556 crore. This represents a substantial 28% year-on-year increase in the outstanding digital personal loan portfolio's value.
The average loan size has also seen a noticeable rise, growing by 15% to ₹18,802. This suggests a gradual trend towards borrowers seeking larger amounts. Despite the expansion, the quality of these digital loans remains robust, with just 1.4% of the portfolio being more than 90 days past due as of June 2026.
Digital NBFCs are playing an increasingly crucial role in India's retail credit market, serving a diverse customer base across various age groups and locations. The segment is characterized by its accessibility, particularly for younger borrowers and those in Tier III cities. This growth underscores the importance of responsible lending practices and transparency in the expanding digital lending landscape.
