Govt Acts to Stop Diesel Black Market
12 Jun
Summary
- Daily diesel sales capped at 200 litres per customer.
- Regulation targets bulk buyers exploiting price differences.
- Temporary order enforced for up to 90 days to ensure supply.

The government has introduced a temporary regulation to address increased demand and supply pressures at public sector fuel stations.
Effective for up to 90 days from June 12, 2026, the 'Motor Spirit and High-Speed Diesel (Temporary Regulation of Supply through Retail Outlets) Order, 2026' limits diesel sales to 200 litres per customer or vehicle daily.
This move targets hoarding and black marketing, particularly by large industrial, institutional, and commercial consumers who shifted purchases to retail outlets due to a nearly Rs 40 per litre price difference. Authorities also noted instances of diesel being resold after bulk purchases in jerry cans.
Government data from May indicated significant diesel sales growth exceeding 10% in 327 districts and over 30% in 80 districts at PSU retail outlets compared to the previous year. The ministry clarified that the 200-litre limit is intended for bulk buyers and does not impact average private vehicle needs.
