Retail Traders Flee Derivatives, Options Defy Slump
25 Aug
Summary
- Active retail traders fell by a fifth to 78.6 lakh in FY26.
- Gross equity derivatives turnover dropped by only 5%.
- Options turnover grew by 16% while futures turnover fell 20%.

The Indian equity derivatives market experienced a notable shift in FY26, with active retail trader participation falling by a fifth. Approximately 78.6 lakh individual traders remained active, down from 98.1 lakh in the previous fiscal year. This decline occurred despite the resilience shown by index options trading.
Gross equity derivatives turnover saw a modest 5% decrease, reaching ₹202.26 trillion in FY26. This was largely influenced by a sharp 20% contraction in individual futures turnover, while options turnover demonstrated robust growth, increasing by 16%. This divergence indicates a concentration of trading activity among persistent, often higher-turnover, traders.
The study also noted an increase in the average net loss per trader, rising by 2.4% to ₹1.17 lakh in FY26. This occurred even as overall participation diminished, suggesting increased speculative activity within the options segment. Regulatory changes and increased securities transaction tax on derivatives likely contributed to these market dynamics.
