Delhi Gears Up to Regulate E-Rickshaws
10 Feb
Summary
- Delhi government plans a comprehensive policy for e-rickshaw regulation.
- Over 2 lakh registered e-rickshaws operate in Delhi; many unregistered.
- Policy aims to balance passenger safety with operator livelihoods.

The Delhi government is preparing a comprehensive policy to regulate e-rickshaws, a popular but largely unregulated mode of transport. Officials have been tasked with drafting this policy, which aims to safeguard the livelihoods of e-rickshaw operators while addressing crucial passenger and road safety concerns.
The initiative follows concerns raised by resident welfare associations regarding safety hazards. Currently, Delhi has over 2 lakh registered e-rickshaws, with a significant number operating without registration. The policy intends to allow unregistered vehicles to register, outlining the necessary rules and norms.
E-rickshaws have become vital for last-mile connectivity, especially for women, seniors, and students. The forthcoming policy is expected to establish a framework for vehicle registration, driver regulations, passenger safety, parking, and charging infrastructure.
The first meeting for policy drafting is scheduled for later this month. Inputs from resident welfare associations, operator representatives, market associations, citizens, and transport officials will be considered.
