Scientist Accused of Stealing Dodo Secrets
6 Nov
Summary
- Former scientist allegedly stole dodo and moa research.
- Accused of transferring confidential data to personal accounts.
- Rival ventures allegedly received stolen de-extinction technology.

Colossal Biosciences, a company focused on de-extinction, has filed a lawsuit accusing former employee James Kehler of stealing proprietary research and trade secrets. The suit claims Kehler had access to cutting-edge genome editing and stem cell biology crucial for projects like reviving the dodo and moa birds, and creating allergen-free cats.
According to the lawsuit, Kehler transferred confidential information from his company-issued laptop to personal cloud accounts and devices before leaving. Colossal alleges that Kehler then utilized this stolen know-how for his work at Neion Bio, a startup developing medicines, and Felix Pets, which aims to produce gene-edited, allergen-free cats.
Colossal, which has also claimed success in de-extincting the dire wolf in April 2025, states that Kehler's departure directly preceded significant progress at Felix Pets. The company, co-founded by Ben Lamm and George Church in 2021, is known for its ambitious plans, including reviving the woolly mammoth.
Kehler, who holds a PhD in cell and molecular biology, has not yet responded to requests for comment. Colossal's complaint was filed in US federal court in Texas on Friday, November 6, 2026.
