Dayton Library Brews Up New In-House Café, Aims to Boost Community Ties
18 Nov
Summary
- New café to open in Dayton library after 8 months of empty space
- Café is a fast-casual version of local breakfast restaurant Ugly Duckling
- Café plans to host community events and expand its reach

In January 2026, a new café is set to open in the Dayton library, bringing the aroma of freshly brewed coffee back to the space after it had been empty for the past 8 months. The café is the fast-casual version of the Ugly Duckling, a popular breakfast restaurant located about a mile away from the library.
The previous coffee shop, the Coffee Hub, had operated in the library for 7 years but closed last year due to a decline in customers. This came as the library had to change its hours due to teenage fights happening in and around the facility. However, the new café's co-owner, Mason Schindler, is confident they will have a different experience.
"Here in the community, we do art nights. I think being a part of the library will give us more of an opportunity to expand and do more things in the community here," Schindler said. The Ugly Duckling was one of many businesses that applied to use the vacant space in the library, and Schindler is excited to start working on the new café and brainstorming ways to engage the community.
