Hot Money Shifts: AI Exits, Crypto Enters
3 Sep
Summary
- Hot money is reportedly moving from AI investments to cryptocurrencies.
- Bitcoin saw a rally following U.S. bond buyback announcements.
- Money remains essential for AI operations and transactions.

Changpeng Zhao, founder of the Binance crypto exchange, has observed a significant shift in investment capital. He stated on September 2, 2026, that 'hot money' is flowing out of artificial intelligence (AI) companies and back into the cryptocurrency market. Investors had previously channeled substantial funds into major AI firms such as NVIDIA, AMD, and Broadcom throughout much of 2026.
This rotation appears to coincide with a U.S. Treasury announcement made around August 19, 2026. This announcement detailed plans to significantly increase longer-term government bond buybacks, a move that injected liquidity into the crypto market. Bitcoin's value subsequently rose from approximately $64,500 on August 19 to over $81,000 by late August, before settling around $77,300.
Despite the prominence of AI discussions, Zhao asserted that money will not become obsolete. He explained that both individuals and AI systems require capital. AI cannot replace money because it is necessary for purchasing resources, compensating employees, and executing business deals. Even AI agents need funds to complete transactions.
