Sunshine and Jeffrey Dupuy embarked on an extraordinary journey across the United States, which culminated in the opening of their restaurant, The Crooked Biscuit, in Wolverine. The couple, who previously lived in Louisiana, began their adventure after their children moved out, driving a Mini Cooper with very limited funds. They supported themselves by delivering food through DoorDash, visiting 26 states and even camping in a tent along the Manistee River.
Their travels led them to Michigan, a state they instantly fell in love with, describing it as "like a Hallmark movie." This deep affection prompted them to sell their belongings in Louisiana and permanently relocate to Northern Michigan. Their experience, including a roadside food stop, took nine months from conception to reality.
The Crooked Biscuit, a specialty get-and-go eatery, officially opened its doors on Friday, April 10, 2026. The menu features Sunshine's award-winning gumbo, Cajun biscuits and gravy, a century-old fudge recipe, and heirloom marshmallows. While the biscuits and Cajun gravy are constants, the daily menu offers a rotating selection of unique dishes.
Sunshine, who grew up in the restaurant industry with four generations of bakers and cooks in her family, credits her faith for the encouragement to start her first business. The restaurant is located at 12909 S. Straits Highway, a space formerly occupied by a deli, which provided essential kitchen equipment, simplifying the setup process. The Crooked Biscuit aims to "steal your heart and shake up your tastebuds."
