Coupang's Growth Rebounds, But Profits Shrink
13 Oct
Summary
- Retail revenue grew 8% in Q2 2026, up from 5% in Q1.
- Active customers rose to 24.7 million in Q2 2026.
- Gross margin slipped to 28.2%, down 188 basis points year-over-year.

Coupang experienced a divergence in the first half of 2026, as its primary shopping segment regained growth momentum while its profitability weakened. By the second quarter, retail revenue saw an 8% increase in constant currency, an improvement from the 5% growth registered in the first quarter.
Despite this uptick, the company's adjusted EBITDA was $163 million against approximately $8.9 billion in revenue. This challenging mix is particularly notable for Coupang, often likened to South Korea's Amazon, operating a vast e-commerce platform with services like Rocket Delivery, Coupang Eats, Coupang Play, and Farfetch.
The company's resilience was tested after a data breach affecting 33 million accounts late in 2025, which led to significant compensation payouts. However, customer loyalty remained strong, with active retail customers increasing to 24.7 million in Q2 2026 and revenue per active customer rising 5% to $321.
Coupang's developing businesses, including Eats and Play, generated about $1.4 billion in the second quarter, a 24% increase in constant currency. Despite a reduced adjusted EBITDA loss of $219 million, these ventures continue to consume profits.
The primary concern lies with shrinking margins; gross margin fell to 28.2%, and the retail segment's adjusted EBITDA margin dropped to 5.1%. Free cash flow also significantly decreased. Management appears optimistic, evidenced by substantial stock repurchases and rising hedge fund interest, though a path to improved profitability remains crucial for justifying its valuation.
