Helston's 40-Year Free Car Park Now Charges £5.50 Daily
19 Mar
Summary
- Several previously free Cornwall car parks will now have charges.
- Helston's Fairground car park faces a new £5.50 daily fee.
- Car park tariffs are increasing by 3.8% across Cornwall.

Cornwall Council has approved the introduction of charges for several car parks that were previously free. This decision follows a scrutiny committee vote against the proposals earlier this month. The Helston Fairground car park, which has been free for more than four decades, will now impose a daily fee of £5.50. This site's unique management challenges, being situated on marshland, were cited as a reason for its specific tariff introduction.
Other locations now featuring charges include Hamleys Corner in Par, Howells Bridge in Stratton, Scarletts Well in Bodmin, Viewing Point North in Widemouth, and Thanckes Park in Torpoint. The council also approved a 3.8% increase for all its chargeable car parks, aligning with current inflation rates.
Further adjustments include Moresk and Edward Street car parks in Truro becoming free after 4 PM, with increased tariffs elsewhere in Truro to compensate for lost revenue. In Newquay, Tolcarne Road will be repurposed for long-stay parking, adding up to 80 spaces. Helston's Trengrouse Way and Liskeard's Cattle Market are also being converted to long-stay and short-stay facilities, respectively.
