Contactless Card Limits: You Decide!
19 Dec
Summary
- Users will soon set their own contactless payment limits.
- Banks can offer unlimited single payment amounts.
- FCA encourages personalized payment controls for users.

From March, millions of individuals will gain the ability to establish their own contactless card payment limits or choose to have no limit at all. Banks and card providers will soon be empowered to set a maximum, or even an unlimited, single payment amount, removing the necessity for PIN entry on such transactions.
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is actively encouraging these financial institutions to enable cardholders to customize their individual spending limits or to completely deactivate the contactless payment function if desired. Some banks already provide this flexibility to their customers, offering a degree of personalized control over contactless spending.
This regulatory shift by the FCA arrives despite its own survey indicating a general lack of consumer and industry demand for changes to the existing £100 contactless card limit. The move signals a move towards greater user autonomy in managing digital payment security and spending habits.
