Colombia Inflation Woes: Target Missed Until Mid-2028
27 Aug
Summary
- Inflation in Colombia is not expected to reach the 3% target until mid-2028.
- Annual inflation stood at 6.03% as of the end of July.
- The fiscal rule, limiting spending and borrowing, was suspended for three years.

Colombia's central bank chief Leonardo Villar announced that current economic models indicate inflation will only approach the 3% target by mid-2028. This forecast comes as the bank's technical team revised its year-end 2027 inflation projection upwards to 4.3%.
Annual inflation in Latin America's fourth-largest economy has surpassed the target since 2021, reaching 6.03% by the end of July. Villar highlighted that robust domestic demand growth, outpacing production, is creating upward price pressure and complicating inflation control.
Meanwhile, Vice-Minister of Finance Juan Sebastian Betancur expressed doubt about the short-term feasibility of returning to compliance with the fiscal rule. The government suspended adherence to this rule, established in 2011 to ensure fiscal sustainability, for a three-year period starting in June 2025.
