28 Jan
Summary
- Coimbatore's RS Puram car park is fully reopening after three years.
- The facility, built for 380 cars, had been inoperable due to lift issues.
- A month of partial operation saw positive public response to revived systems.

The Coimbatore city corporation is preparing to fully operationalize the hydraulic multilevel car parking facility in RS Puram. This comes after a month-long partial operation, which saw over 150 cars accommodated and garnered a positive public response. The facility, which has been largely disused since early 2023 due to malfunctioning hydraulic lifts, is now expected to have its remaining two floors operational within the next 15 days.
Constructed under the smart city mission for R40.78 crore on 2.87 acres, the four-storeyed parking structure was originally commissioned in 2022. It was designed to accommodate 380 cars using five hydraulic lifts and advanced parking management systems. However, the facility quickly fell into disuse as its hydraulic lifts stopped working, leading to an abandoned state for approximately three years.
