Shirine Khoury-Haq, the 55-year-old chief executive of the Co-op, has announced her resignation, effective at the end of this week. Her exit follows recent accusations from staff detailing a 'toxic culture' characterized by fear and alienation within the organization.
These allegations were reportedly made in a letter to the board. Senior staff shared concerns with the BBC, describing an intimidating environment where open communication was discouraged. Khoury-Haq stated that staff consulted regarding the 'toxic issues' did not recognize the description.
Additionally, the Co-op reported that a cyber-attack last year significantly impacted its profits, causing a £107 million reduction and leading to overall losses of £126 million for the 12 months ending January 3. Kate Allum will assume the role of interim director.
