Outdoor recreation has become a mainstream pastime across China, with participation exceeding 500 million people by the end of 2025. This surge has propelled related industries to an estimated value of 3.17 trillion yuan ($475.18 billion).
Individuals aged 19 to 49 constitute the largest segment of participants, representing 76.16 percent of the total. The trend is also gaining traction in lower-tier cities, which accounted for 42 percent of outdoor sports consumption in 2025. Urban commuting and related attire are the leading consumption areas, followed by hiking and cycling.
Experts herald this as a "golden age" for outdoor sports in China, marking a shift from functional consumption to a lifestyle embracing quality and immersive experiences. Supportive government policies and investments in facilities are further fostering this growth.
Notable destinations like Moganshan in Zhejiang and Yangshuo in Guangxi are attracting millions of visitors, transforming their economies through outdoor sports. Yangshuo, in particular, has leveraged its natural landscape for climbing, water sports, and adventure tourism.
Challenges remain in supplying qualified instructors and standardized services. However, the focus is on integrating outdoor activities into urban communities, creating jobs, and fostering a sustainable outdoor culture with unique Chinese event intellectual properties.
