China's Chip Giants Dictate Prices, Challenge Rivals
24 Jul
Summary
- Chinese memory chip makers are now dictating prices to clients.
- CXMT secured a five-year deal with ByteDance worth over $7 billion.
- US is scrutinizing Chinese chip firms for market power and military ties.

Chinese memory chip manufacturers, CXMT and YMTC, have ascended to a dominant market position, now dictating prices and selecting clients. This shift is driven by the global demand surge for AI data centers, transforming low-margin memory components into critical, high-value products. CXMT, for instance, recently finalized a five-year agreement with ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, valued at over $7 billion.
The growing clout of CXMT and YMTC, dubbed China's "twin stars" of memory, has drawn the attention of Washington. The Pentagon has identified both firms as Chinese military companies, a charge they deny. YMTC is already subject to U.S. trade restrictions, and discussions are ongoing regarding further curbs on both companies' access to essential chipmaking equipment.
Despite geopolitical pressures and reliance on foreign equipment for advanced manufacturing, Chinese memory makers are expanding. CXMT plans to more than double its production capacity by 2030, potentially surpassing Micron. Both firms are also preparing for IPOs, aiming for significant valuations, supported by Chinese state investment and government directives prioritizing domestic supply.
