China Stocks Tumble: Yuan Strength Caps Rally
22 May
Summary
- Shanghai Composite Index fell nearly 2% to 4077.
- Chinese yuan hit its strongest level in over three years.
- Global markets reacted to US-Iran tensions and oil prices.

Chinese stock markets experienced a sharp decline today, with the Shanghai Composite Index (CSI) falling approximately 2% to close at 4077. This tested a near three-week low, influenced by a mixed global risk sentiment and capped upside at the 4200 mark. The CSI Semiconductor Index saw a notable drop.
A key factor influencing the markets was the strength of the Chinese yuan. China's central bank set the yuan's daily reference rate against the US dollar at its strongest point in more than three years, reaching 6.8349 on Thursday. This marked the highest level since February 2023.
In other Asian markets, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index lost around 1%, approaching a six-week low. Conversely, South Korea's Kospi index surged over 8%, boosted by news of paused strikes at Samsung Electronics. Japan's Nikkei index closed with a gain of 3.1%.
Global attention remained focused on developments concerning the US-Iran conflict and the resulting volatility in crude oil prices, which saw an increase of more than 2% today. These external factors contributed to the cautious undertone in financial markets.
