China's Inflation Surges: Producer Prices Hit 22-Month High
10 Jun
Summary
- Producer prices rose 3.9% year-on-year in May, the highest since July 2022.
- Consumer prices increased by 1.2% year-on-year in May.
- Elevated global energy prices are driving increased manufacturing and household costs.

China's producer prices have shown a significant increase, rising for a third consecutive month in May. The producer price index (PPI) saw a year-on-year increase of 3.9%, the highest recorded since July 2022 and surpassing previous month's 2.8% rise. This upward trend in manufacturing costs is attributed to sustained high global energy prices.
Concurrently, China's consumer prices also experienced a rise. The consumer price index (CPI) recorded a 1.2% increase year-on-year, consistent with the previous month's figures. However, on a monthly basis, the CPI edged down by 0.1%, meeting market expectations. These figures highlight the ongoing inflationary pressures affecting both producers and consumers.
