China Creates Massive No-Fly Zone Over Beijing

Effective September 20, China will implement a significant Special Restricted Area around Beijing, a vast circle spanning 600 kilometers in diameter. This expansive zone, covering over 280,000 square kilometers, will enforce strict flight limitations. Only commercial airline flights, approved business aviation, and official operations such as military, customs, police, and fire-rescue flights will be permitted within this airspace, from ground level to unlimited altitude.
The establishment of this extensive no-fly zone is a direct response to a security breach earlier this year. On June 26, a light sport aircraft unexpectedly entered Beijing's controlled airspace and crashed into the CITIC Tower. While authorities attributed the crash to the pilot's personal intentions, the incident highlighted potential security gaps.
To ensure compliance, all exempt flights must adhere to pre-approved flight plans, maintain continuous radio communication, and be equipped with surveillance and identification equipment for tracking. Pilots must also report their security status before entering the restricted area. This measure aims to significantly strengthen airspace security management for the capital region.
